The company SRAM was founded in 1987 in Chicago. The company's name is an acronym composed of the names of its founders, Scott King, Stan Ray Day and Sam Patterson. SRAM became known for GripShift twisters, which were developed in the 1980s for racing and triathlon bikes and also installed on mountain bikes from the beginning of the 90s. The company then began to expand its range through its own developments and brand acquisitions. In 2002 the suspension fork and rear shock manufacturer RockShox was acquired, and in 2004 the brake manufacturer Avid was also acquired. With the acquisition of Truvativ in 2005, SRAM was able to expand its portfolio in the areas of bottom brackets, cranks, handlebars and stems for mountain bikes. In 2007, the product range was further developed with American wheel manufacturer ZIPP. With the purchase of the power meter manufacturer Quarq in 2011, the company completed its product range. With these brands, SRAM manufactures components for almost all types of bicycles.
